“Twilight’s” Catherine Hardwicke to direct CBS pilot “Reckless”
Catherine Hardwicke, film director behind “Twilight” and “Red Riding Hood,” has signed on to direct CBS’ drama pilot “Reckless”, reports Deadline Hollywood. A steamy legal soap executive produced by “Ghost Whisperer” producers Ian Sander and Kim Moses, “Reckelss” takes place in Charleston, South Carolina, where a Yankee litigator and a Southern City Attorney struggle to hide their intense attraction while clashing over a police sex scandal.
Though no stranger to directing, Catherine Hardwicke’s television experience is limited. She had previously directed an episode of AMC’s period Western “Hell On Wheels”. But her experience in features is certain to lend much creative weight to her small screen exploits with “Reckless”, having directed portions of “Twilight,” as well as the films “Red Riding Hood,” “Lords of Dogtown” and the forthcoming “Plush.”
Catherine Hardwicke spent most of her early career in film as a production designer, working on such films as “Tombstone” (1993), “Tank Girl” (1995) and “Three Kings” (1999). She collaborated with director/screenwriter Cameron Crowe and actor/producer Tom Cruise on “Vanilla Sky” (2001).
In 2008, Catherine Hardwicke became the most commercially successful female director in Hollywood, when she directed the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling novel, “Twilight,” starring teen heart throbs Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson. “Twilight” was the first in a series of five romance fantasy films, “The Twilight Saga,” which has grossed over $2 billion in worldwide box office receipts. New York Press critic Armond White called “Twilight”, “a genuine pop classic”, and praised Catherine Hardwicke for turning “Meyer’s book series into a Brontë-esque vision.”
In related news, apparently, Catherine Hardwicke has the midas touch, which bodes well for “Reckless”. Her “Twilight” stars, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were last month christened Hollywood’s highest-grossing romantic on-screen couple’ by Forbes. The trusted business news group looked at the top-grossing romantic movies of the last three years, in which time “Twilight” earned a whopping $1.17 billion (domestically; internationally the franchise grossed $3.3 billion.)
